Mold Removal
Written by admin
Let’s be honest: discovering mold inside your car is a nightmare. It’s unsightly, it smells terrible, and worst of all, it’s a genuine health hazard. Here in the Pacific Northwest—and especially in Vancouver—the combination of high humidity and rainy seasons makes vehicles incredibly susceptible to mold infestations.
At Steam Tech Auto Spa, we receive frantic calls every week from owners who opened their doors to find green fuzz on their seats or a musty odor that won’t go away.
If you are dealing with this, your instinct might be to grab some generic cleaner and start scrubbing. Stop. Cleaning mold incorrectly is actually worse than doing nothing at all; it launches microscopic spores into the air, contamination your entire cabin and potentially your lungs.
Here is why mold happens, the dangers it poses, and how our specialized professional remediation process at Steam Tech Auto Spa is the only way to truly reclaim your car.
The Dangers of Car Mold
-
Mold inside a vehicle isn’t just about a bad smell. It’s a health risk. Mold spores are a powerful allergen. Exposure to car mold can cause:
-
Respiratory issues: Coughing, wheezing, and sinus congestion.
-
Allergic reactions: Sneezing, itchy eyes, and skin rashes.
-
Asthma triggers: Severely aggravating existing asthma conditions.
Furthermore, if left untreated, mold will physically digest and destroy your car’s interior, including leather, upholstery, and carpeting, severely diminishing the vehicle’s value.
-
We look between the seats, lift the seats, clean every part of the interior.
Why a Standard Detail Won't Work
When customers call us, their first question is often: “Can’t you just shampoo it out?”
The simple answer is: No. A standard shampoo is designed to lift dirt, not kill microscopic organisms. If you don’t kill the mold, the moisture you add during a standard detail will actually cause it to grow back faster and more aggressively.
At Steam Tech Auto Spa, we don’t just “clean” mold—we execute a complete remediation process designed to kill, remove, and sanitize.

Critical Check: Finding the Source
Mold cannot grow without moisture. If you don’t find the leak, the mold will return within weeks. Check the “Big Four” common culprits:
-
Sunroof Drains: Often clogged with debris, causing water to backup into the headliner or footwells.
-
Door Seals: Torn or dry-rotted weatherstripping.
-
AC Drain Line: A clogged evaporator drain will dump water onto the passenger side floor.
-
Cabin Air Filter: If the mold smell persists, the filter is likely infested and must be replaced.
1. Safety-First Intake & Inspection
Before we begin, we use personal protective equipment (PPE)—masks, gloves, and eye protection—and work in a highly ventilated bay. Our team conducts a full moisture inspection to identify where the water is coming from (common sources in Vancouver include clogged sunroof drains, bad door seals, or a leaking AC evaporator).
2. Specialized HEPA Vacuuming
We start by vacuuming the entire interior with a industrial-strength HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration vacuum. This is critical. A standard shop vacuum will simply exhaust spores back into the cabin air. A HEPA filter captures 99.97% of those microscopic spores, containing the problem before the deep cleaning begins.
3. High-Heat Steam Disinfection
This is where our expertise makes the difference. The “Steam Tech” method is lethal to mold. We apply dry, vapor-phase steam heated to over 100°C (212°F) directly to the affected surfaces.
This extreme temperature is lethal to all common mold species. The steam penetrates deep into the fabric and upholstery fibers (the “roots” of the mold), killing the organisms on contact without oversaturating the material with excessive water.
4. Antimicrobial Treatment and Deep Extraction
Next, we treat all affected surfaces with a professional-grade antimicrobial solution that is tough on mold but safe for your vehicle’s delicate interior surfaces (like leather or Alcantara). After letting the solution dwell, we use a heated extractor to pull the dead spores and cleaning agents out of the fabric, ensuring no residue is left behind.
5. Total Cabin Sanitation with Ozone (The Final Step)
Mold doesn’t just stick to the surfaces you can see. It hides in the headliner and inside your HVAC vents. The final phase of our process is an Ozone Treatment. We run a powerful ozone generator inside the sealed vehicle for 30–60 minutes. Ozone gas fills every inch of the cabin, including the air ducts, neutralizing odors and eliminating any remaining airborne spores. We then fully ventilate the vehicle before returning it to you.
Breathe Easy Again
Dealing with car mold is stressful, but you don’t have to do it alone. At Steam Tech Auto Spa, we have the training, the specialized equipment, and the “Steam Tech” power to restore your car to a safe, healthy environment.
